Immigration Process

Many Singaporeans immigrating will obtain their Green Card and become lawful permanent residents (LPRs) through family sponsorship or as immediate relatives of US citizens. A large number also choose to immigrate and obtain lawful permanent residence through employment-based pathways. Singaporean immigrants are more likely to become LPRs through each of these pathways than the overall LPR population.

Working in the US

Chilean immigrants in the US have become active participants in the labor force. To immigrate for employment, it is important to obtain a work visa . Immigrant work visas include the EB-1 and EB-2, both leading to receipt of a Green Card soon after entry. Non-immigrant work visas include the H-1B, L-1, O-1, and E-1, and are temporary. However, if an individual comes to the United States to work with a non-immigrant visa and wishes to become a permanent resident, they may be eligible to change their classification and apply for an immigrant work visa while in the States. H-1B1 Visa

The H-1B1 program provides for the temporary employment of nonimmigrant aliens in specialty occupations from Chile and Singapore, limited to 1,400 nationals of Chile and 5,400 nationals of Singapore. The H-1B1 program is governed by many of the rules that apply to the H-1B program. The period of employment is one year. Extensions may be obtained twice but only in one year increments. Further extensions can be obtained only with the filing of a new Labor Condition Application.

Family-based visas, the most common pathway to legal permanent residence among Lebanese immigrants, come in two categories: Immediate Relative and Family Preference. An individual immigrant’s relationship to family members who are US citizens or permanent residents will determine which visa is best.
