Those Americans who have full or partial ancestry from Russia are often called Russian Americans. As of 2017, there are over 403,670 Russians living among the United States. Those who are from the former USSR are also considered Russian Americans. Russian Americans can be decendent of Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Moldova, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Soviet Union, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Estonia, Taikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan. There are over 1,114,602 Russian Americans (including former USSR) living in the US. 

There were several waves of immigration to the US from Russia starting in 1870. Currently, Russia makes up the 19th highest migrant group overall and the 11th highest from Europe into the US.

There are several festivals that continously celebrate Russian culture in the US. One of the largest Russian festivals in the US is called the “Russian Festival” which takes place in Baltimore, Maryland.

Immigration Process

To become a lawful permanent resident of the United States, one must obtain a Green Card . Most immigrants will do so through employment , through family sponsorship , or by being an immediate relative of a US citizen, the latter being most common among Russian immigrants.

Worker Programs

Immigrant work visas include the EB-1 and EB-2 visas, and imply receipt of a Green Card soon after entry. Non-immigrant work visas are temporary, and include the H-1B, L-1, O-1, E-1, and TN. As Mexico is a member of NAFTA, Mexican immigrants are one of two groups eligible for the TN visa . If an immigrant comes to the US under a non-immigrant work visa and wishes to become a permanent resident, they may change their classification and apply for an immigrant work visa while in the states.
