Ukraine Relief from the United States

By Ella Bergquist March 7, 2022 (Updated March 7, 2022) 3 min. read
Ukraine to the US Refugee

Under a sort of humanitarian aid, the Department of Homeland Security will enable Ukrainians in the United States to remain in the nation.

People who would face extreme hardship if forced to return to homelands devastated by armed conflict or natural disasters are eligible for the relief, which is known as Temporary Protected Status. However, the protections are only available to those who are already in the United States. The Secretary of Homeland Security has the authority to designate a nation for TPS.

“Russia’s premeditated and unprovoked attack on Ukraine has resulted in an ongoing war, senseless violence, and Ukrainians forced to seek refuge in other countries,” DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said. “In these extraordinary times, we will continue to offer our support and protection to Ukrainian nationals in the United States.”

Ukraine joins a group of 12 nations that have been granted TPS, including South Sudan and Venezuela.

How Many Ukrainians Can Stay in the US for TPS?

According to a DHS official, some 75,100 persons are expected to be eligible to apply for TPS under Ukraine’s classification, which is more than twice prior predictions. To be eligible, individuals must have lived in the United States continuously since March 1, and the TPS designation will last for 18 months.

According to the Migration Policy Institute, a non-partisan research group, this protected status might assist 30,000 Ukrainians on visas. Visas are only valid for a certain amount of time, therefore extending TPS to Ukrainians on visas would protect them from deportation after their visas expired.

Can Ukrainians Come to the United States?

As of right now, there are no new streams or relief for Ukrainians escaping Ukraine to the US but this doesn’t mean we can’t help! There are still many streams that someone from Ukraine may be eligible for. Contact us today to discuss your options to help you immigrate from Ukraine to the US.

How to Help Ukrainians From the US

The US government has not announced that they are providing any funds to Ukraine for relief or support yet but there are many private donation options and non-profits that are raising money for Ukraine.

Where to Donate for Ukraine Relief

Airbnb: The vacation rental firm said that it will provide up to 100,000 Ukrainian refugees with short-term lodging. The company and donations to the Host Refugee will cover the costs of the stays. People are asked not merely to provide money, but also to welcome vulnerable migrants into their homes.

Ukraine Red Cross: All funds will be used to help those in need, affected by armed conflict, blood collection, mobilization of volunteers and resources, and emergency activities.

CARE: The international humanitarian group is providing food, water, and other items to families fleeing violence in Ukraine.’

Doctors Without Borders: Staffers with the medical relief organization remain in Ukraine and are “seeking ways to respond to the medical and humanitarian needs as the conflict evolves.”

When you get the opportunity to go to the US for work from abroad, then I would say VisaPlace would be your best option to get all your documents in place. My 5 star feedback is based on the help I received from Danielle Grbic as she was really professional, I would straight away ask for Danielle to be in charge of your process. From the time that Danielle took over my case I felt confident that it will go well and at the end it went smoother than expected. On my own I would never have been able to get this internal work transfer done as a L1 visa and was best for the professionals to take charge. After arriving in the US, Danielle was still happy to assist with documents and advise. A huge thanks to Danielle and VisaPlace

I spoke with Lilly last week and she’s incredible. Very informative and you can tell she definably cares about her job. She wasn’t pushy at all and she’s there to help you figure out if this service is right for you. I’d recommend contacting VisaPlace if you’re thinkin of traveling internationally and you have questions about the different types of permits.

I had a great experience with Andrew Diamond from The Visa Place. Andrew was very knowledgable and helped us every step of the way. When we had a discrepancy with my spouse’s Visa Andrew helped us navigate the system in the USA. He even offered to speak directly to the customs and border control officer to help us iron out the situation. Overall the experience was very good and smooth. I highly recommend Andrew and his services at The Visa Place.

Extremely satisfied with the professionalism, expertise, efficiency, speed and thoroughness at which my file was managed. Fadi & Danielle are true class acts! Their response times were fantastic (especially during a high-stress period), their quality of work was phenomenal, and their willingness to go the extra mile (without hidden costs, no less!) to prepare me for my work permit interview was unmatched. I strongly recommend VisaPlace to anyone seeking legal counsel as it relates to cross-border services. Highest Regards, Krista
